Cleveland SC claimed an opening round victory in the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup for the second year in a row. On Thursday night, they defeated Lionsbridge FC 1-0 in front of their home fans in North Olmsted, Ohio.

With the win, Cleveland SC will advance to Round 2 where they will travel to take on a professional team from USL League One. This year, the opponent will be the Richmond Kickers on April 6.

This game was a defensive battle that ended in an all-out physical and emotional war as nine cards, including one red card, were given out during this game.

“We have to be smart and manage the game, some of those cards were cheap.” said Vlad Muresean on what he told his team on handling emotions.

Cleveland SC played near 20 minutes one man down as they held out for the win as Lionsbridge FC was on the attack.

Cleveland was fast from the jump thanks to a high press and a direct attack that kept Lionsbridge in their own end in the first half. Cleveland used their back four defenders to help move the ball up.

The home side tried various through ball attempts to the wings and striker trying to set up offense. Cleveland had more attempts in the first half with three shots on net.

Cleveland held possession for majority of the first half while Lionsbridge could do nothing but buckle down and buckle down they did. Cleveland controlled majority of the of the half while Lionsbridge started to control the ball and keep it away from Cleveland defenders.

Despite Lionsbridge finding their pace on offense, Cleveland found magic in a bottle after Chris Cvecko put one in the back of the net to give Cleveland their first lead in stoppage time. Kieran Toland delivered a through ball to Cvecko on the right side of the penalty area and the veteran forward ran onto it. On his way to the goal, he hit the brakes and cut the ball back to his left foot to avoid a sliding defender, and beat the keeper.

As Cleveland led going into the half there was a yellow card issued to the Lionsbridge bench, this was just the beginning of yellow cards issued.

The second half was a defensive showdown filled with high emotions. Both teams shared the same number of chances on offense. Around the 60th minute of play, the game turned into a heavyweight boxing match. Eight cards were earned in the second half by both sides with a red card received by Jannis Schmidt in the 73rd minute.

Defending for 20 minutes, one man down in an elimination game is a tall task, Cleveland rose to the occasion as Lionsbridge FC tried taking advantage of Cleveland’s misfortune. The visitors had a few golden chances to even up the game, they could not beat the Cleveland back line as time expired eliminating Lionsbridge FC and sending Cleveland SC to Richmond for the Second Round.

“We have nothing to lose … This is a very confident group,” Muresean said about advancing to Round 2 of the US Open Cup. If they are able to upset their first pro team in the next round, they would become the first amateur team from Northern Ohio to reach the Third Round in the Modern Era (1995-present).

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Former Browns head coach Freddie Kitchens is going back to school.

South Carolina is hiring the longtime NFL coach as a senior football analyst, the school announced today. Kitchens was hired by the Browns in 2018 as running backs coach and was promoted to offensive coordinator midway through the season after head coach Hue Jackson and offensive coordinator Todd Haley were fired.

Kitchens was promoted to head coach in 2019 but was fired after a 6-10 season. He spent the last two years with the Giants as tight ends coach in 2020 and a senior offensive assistant in 2021 before taking over as interim offensive coordinator.

“I worked with Freddie Kitchens previously at Mississippi State and have known him for close to 20 years,” South Carolina head coach Shane Beamer said via the team’s website. “He’s a fantastic coach with head coaching experience and coordinator experience. He’s a long-time NFL coach who will be a great asset and resource for our program and will help us in so many ways.”

Kitchens, 47, began his coaching career at Glenville State in 1999 after playing quarterback at Alabama, eventually landing at Mississippi State coaching tight ends in 2004 and running backs in 2005. Beamer was the cornerbacks coach and recruiting coordinator there in 2004 and 2005. He also spent time at LSU and North Texas.

He started his pro coaching career with the Cowboys in 2006 before moving to Arizona in 2007, where he coached in various roles until the Browns hired him.

The Browns chose Kitchens over Kevin Stefanski in 2019. They hired Stefanski a year later.

ACRE Apartment Homes went before the Design Review Board at the beginning of this month and was met with the board’s recommendation for approval, with conditions — like including a variety of plant species (native + evergreen) along Cleveland Street and on property to maintain visibility but also provide privacy. Last week, the project went before the Planning Commission for approval, but was deferred to September to “allow the developer time to hold another neighborhood meeting to address concerns from the community,” says City of Greenville Communications Director Beth Brotherton. CLEVELAND, Ohio – Low-cost carrier Frontier Airlines is adding Charleston, South Carolina, to its roster of destinations from Cleveland starting in early May, and will resume flying to San Francisco.

At the same time, the airline is ending service to Portland, Oregon.

The carrier will also fly year-round from Cleveland Hopkins to Sarasota, Florida, and Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic, two destinations that recently debuted as winter-only routes.

In a recent phone call, Frontier’s Daniel Shurz, senior vice president of commercial, outlined a series of network additions in Cleveland, which he called “amongst our most successful cities.”

Frontier, known for its low base fares and fee-for-service pricing, has grown rapidly in Cleveland since United Airlines pulled its hub here in 2014.

Among the additions:

* Twice-weekly flights to Charleston, starting May 2. The flights will run Thursdays and Sundays. An introductory sale on the route includes one-way fares starting at $39, if purchased by 11:59 p.m. Tuesday. The Cleveland flights leave at 3:13 p.m., landing in Charleston at 5:15 p.m. The flights from Charleston depart at 6:15 p.m., arriving in Cleveland at 8:12 p.m.

* A return to San Francisco International Airport, a destination it dropped in 2017, in part because of competition on the route from United Airlines. “The overall environment has improved since we pulled out,” said Shurz. “We think it’s a good time to return.” The new route will operate three times a week, on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays, starting April 30. The flight from Cleveland leaves at 3:33 p.m., arriving in San Francisco at 5:54 p.m. The flight from SFO departs at 9:36 p.m., landing in Cleveland at 5:20 a.m. Sale fares on this route start at $79 one way.

* The extension of two seasonal routes, to Sarasota, Florida, and Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic, to year-round destinations.

In addition, the carrier just reloaded San Diego into the schedule for the summer.

The sole summer reduction from Cleveland is a significant one: nonstop service to Portland, Oregon will not return this summer. Frontier is the only airline flying between Cleveland and Portland.

Shurz said that while peak travel weeks in mid-summer had full planes to Portland, late spring and late summer flights didn’t have high enough occupancy. He did not rule out a return to Portland, but he said he believes there is currently more demand for low-cost service to San Francisco.

United Airlines currently flies nonstop between Cleveland and San Francisco, once or twice a day, depending on the season.

United also offers summer-only, once-a-week service to Charleston, which will start back up again in June, according to the airline.

Frontier added Charleston, on the South Carolina coast, to its route network last February. Cleveland will be Frontier’s seventh destination from the city. “Charleston’s status as a destination continues to grow,” said Shurz. “This looks like an obvious next addition to our route network.”

In addition to the new destinations, Shurz said Frontier is adding frequency to several existing routes from Cleveland, including nonstop service to Austin, Orlando, Phoenix, Raleigh and Tampa.

Shurz said Frontier’s passenger numbers in Cleveland this June are projected to be 35 percent higher than the numbers in June 2018. The carrier will have an average of 11 flights a day out of Cleveland this summer, he said.

In 2018, Frontier was the fifth largest carrier in Cleveland, behind United, Southwest, Delta and American. Frontier, however, has more nonstop destinations – 17 – than any other airline serving Cleveland.

The carrier is adding more than a dozen new airplanes to its fleet this year, and is always looking for new markets, said Shurz. “Cleveland continues to be amongst our most successful cities,” said Shurz. “If Northeast Ohio continues to use our services, then there will be more flights to enjoy in the future.”

Former South Carolina football player Jadeveon Clowney has signed w/ a new team.

Jadeveon Clowney’s free agency tour is officially over, as the former South Carolina football star has signed a one-year deal with the Cleveland Browns worth up to $10 million. The pass rusher will now be on his fourth roster in as many years, after bouncing around Houston, Seattle, and Tennessee.

The Browns appear to be a great fit for the former first round pick, as he’ll now team up with Myles Garrett along Cleveland’s front four. Garrett, who took down opposing quarterbacks13 times last year, should take some of the attention off of his new teammate, which is bound to lead to an uptick in Clowney’s production. The duo will be a pain in the sides of AFC North rivals as the Browns try to get back to the playoffs for a second straight season.

Clowney experienced a bit of a down year in his lone season with the Titans, appearing in just eight games due to injury, tallying 19 tackles, and failing to record a sack. Though injury issues have been a knock throughout his career, the defensive end passed a physical prior to his signing, and will hope to get back to the player we saw between 2016 and 2019. In those four seasons, Clowney notched 189 tackles, 27.5 sacks, eight strips, eight fumble recoveries, and three defensive touchdowns. He was a three-time Pro Bowler over that time.

Clowney left South Carolina after his junior year in 2013, becoming the second Gamecock in program history to be selected with the first overall pick. He racked up 24 sacks and nine forced fumbles in his three seasons in Columbia.

As a sophomore, he set a single-season school mark with 13 sacks, finishing sixth in the Heisman voting and winning the Ted Hendricks Award as the nation’s top defensive end. He was a unanimous All-American.
