BE girls all-stars shine on national lacrosse stage

That cupboard is more like a cornucopia that is always bountiful with talented players.The Bishops completed another perfect season, which culminated in May with its sixth consecutive state championship. Some coaches will use the mantra “the cupboard is bare” to describe their situation after a memorable season that includes heavy personnel losses due to graduation.

But when it comes to Bishop England High School girls’ lacrosse, it’s a different story. That cupboard is more like a cornucopia that is always bountiful with talented players.

The Bishops completed another perfect season, which culminated in May with its sixth consecutive state championship. The Bishops blasted Oceanside Collegiate Academy, 21-3, to put an exclamation point on a season that included an undefeated 18-0 record that pushed the Bishops’ winning streak to 82 games. Coach Jeff Weiner said the 2022 BE team was the best ever in the school’s history.

The Bishops bid farewell to four seniors who were in the starting lineup. But this program oozes talent. Five BE players were on a South Carolina all-star team that recently won its division of the USA Lacrosse Women’s National Tournament. The event featured more than 800 of the top high school girls’ lacrosse players in the country.

The BE players who competed for the Sandlappers included Bo Rosato, Henley Bredemann, Evelyn Kitchin, Lizzie Tomkins and Nini Clark.

There were 22 players on the South Carolina squad that won its division for the second straight year. The tourney was held in Bel Air, Maryland, on May 28-29 and offered players from across the country a chance to perform in front of college coaches and recruiters.

The South Carolina team, made up of players who compete in SCISA and the High School League, went 4-0 in the tournament to claim a championship for the second year in a row. The Sandlappers opened play with a 10-9 victory over Texas and then topped the DC

Metro team 14-8. They reached the championship by defeating a team from western New York by a 13-3 margin. In the championship, the Sandlappers topped a team from Ohio by a 12-4 margin.

Weiner, a Long Island native, moved to the Lowcountry more than a decade ago. He had experience in what is one of the hotbeds of lacrosse. He started coaching at BE and took part in camps to help spread the sport’s popularity in the Lowcountry. While South Carolina will never be confused with the ultimate hotbed of lacrosse in Maryland, the talent pool has improved.

“The state of lacrosse in South Carolina, especially in the Lowcountry, has improved tremendously in the last few years,” said Weiner, who turned 73 on June 14. “It will continue to get better.”

Four other players from the Lowcountry competed in the all-star tournament, including two players from Wando and two from Oceanside Collegiate Academy.

Bishop England will begin the season as the favorite to win the state title in 2023. But Weiner said it will be more difficult to have an undefeated season because the schedule will be upgraded with out-of-state teams.

“It will be a challenge,” Weiner said. “We will work hard and be ready.”

Philip Simmons High School will take its next step in its athletic growth and development this fall when the South Carolina High School League’s biennial realignment kicks in in time for the 2022-23 academic year.The Iron Horses will move up from Class AA to Class AAA as the school continues to add about 130-150 students a year.The Iron Horses’ athletic director Dan Minkin expects enrollment at PSHS to reach 850-900 students when classes start in August. Enrollment should top more than 1,000 students next year. That...

Philip Simmons High School will take its next step in its athletic growth and development this fall when the South Carolina High School League’s biennial realignment kicks in in time for the 2022-23 academic year.

The Iron Horses will move up from Class AA to Class AAA as the school continues to add about 130-150 students a year.

The Iron Horses’ athletic director Dan Minkin expects enrollment at PSHS to reach 850-900 students when classes start in August. Enrollment should top more than 1,000 students next year. That’s some impressive growth considering enrollment was 215 students when the school opened its doors in time for the 2017-18 school year. Enrollment jumped to 395 students the following academic year.

“We think it’s great that we’re moving up to (Class) AAA,” Minkin said. “It’s a natural progression. We’ve won a ton of region and state championships and we’re ready to win at the next level.”

Philip Simmons won the Class AA Carlysle Cup for the 2020-21 school year and should win the top prize for the just completed school year. The Carlyle Cup is awarded to a school in each classification with the best athletic programs.

Bishop England has won the Carlyle Cup every year since the award’s conception at the turn of the century. The Bishops won the award last year and should be in the hunt for the 2021-22 cup, which will be announced in a few weeks. However, the Bishops will drop down and compete in Class AA.

Bishop England athletic director Paul Runey pointed out Bishop England and all the other private and charter schools around the state all will compete at the Class AA or Class A levels.

“It’s ironic how they lumped private and charter schools together,” Runey said. “I’m not sure if it’s about (enrollment) numbers.”

In 2020, a proposed amendment would have placed private and charter schools in a separate classification with its own playoffs and championships. Athletic directors voted 113-10 for the amendment. But it needed to pass by a 2/3 majority and did not become reality.

Philip Simmons will compete in Region 8-AAA. Other schools in the region include: Hanahan, North Charleston, Battery Creek and Beaufort.Bishop England will compete in Region 6-AA. Other schools in the region include: Oceanside Collegiate Academy, Lake Marion, Timberland and Academic Magnet.

The South Carolina Junior Golf Association’s Mount Pleasant chapter is a fun, affordable and competitive golf tour open to juniors of all skill levels ages 7-18 beginning June 14 through Aug. 9. The program is a great way for beginners seeking tournament experience all the way to high-level juniors looking for strong, local competition.

Participants 13 and older will compete for state rankings points and all participants compete for a spot in the SCJGA Tommy Cuthbert All- Stars, a major championship held in Seabrook Island in August. The top 2 from each age division qualify for this event.

MTPJGA has some of the best courses in the Lowcountry such as the Daniel Island Club, Bulls Bay and more.

DURHAM, N.C. – The Intercollegiate Men's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IMLCA) announced its All-Region teams and award winners on Tuesday and Washington and Lee garnered several selections on the Region 4 team.

Leading the way was senior goalkeeper Nick Spagnoletti (Madison, N.J. / Madison), who was named the Region 4 Defensive Player of the Year, while he also earned a spot on the first team. Joining Spagnoletti on the first team was senior defensive midfielder Teddy Bentley (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y. / Cold Spring Harbor), senior defenseman Michael Horgan (Charlotte, N.C. / Charlotte Catholic) and junior defenseman Harris Hubbard (Daniel Island, S.C. / Bishop England).

Senior midfielder Tommy MacCowatt (New Vernon, N.J. / Delbarton) rounded out the W&L selections with an honorable mention citation.

As a first-year starter in goal, Spagnoletti played 1006:21 of a possible 1141:46 between the pipes, recording 214 saves with 136 goals allowed. His .611 save percentage ranked 11th in Division III, while his 8.18 goals-against average ranked 17th overall. Spagnoletti posted double-digit save totals in 13 of his 19 games played, including three games with at least 20 saves. He logged 20 saves against then-No. 5 York (Pa.) and 21 saves in back-to-back games against then-No. 4 Christopher Newport and arch-rival Roanoke.

Bentley helped the Generals rank 12th nationally in scoring defense, holding 12 opponents to single-digit goal totals. Bentley finished second on the team with 59 ground balls and he added nine caused turnovers. He also produced a career-best 10 points on seven goals and three assists.

Horgan also played a large role in W&L ranking among the nation's top defenses. He tied with Hubbard with a team-best 19 caused turnovers, also collecting 24 ground balls. Horgan logged eight games with multiple ground balls, with five contests of multiple caused turnovers this season.

Hubbard garnered first team honors after being named to the second team in 2021. He was another major factor in the Generals ranking 12th in Division III in scoring defense (7.89 gpg) and 37th in ground balls. Individually, he tied for the team lead in caused turnovers (19) and he was third on the team in ground balls (48). He also tallied one assist.

MacCowatt, a First Team All-ODAC performer this season, ranked third on the team with 22 goals, while coming in fourth in both assists (9) and points (31). He also added 14 ground balls and two caused turnovers. His top performance came in an 11-8 win over Roanoke when he notched four goals and one assist.

Hubbard's IMLCA All-Region selection was the second of his career, while the other four players each claimed their first.

Washington and Lee completed the 2022 season with a 12-7 overall record. The Generals finished as the ODAC regular-season champion for the fifth straight year and received an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. The Generals were defeated in the NCAA second round by Cabrini College.
